Quick Thinking, Safe Resolution: How Officers Were Able to De-Escalate a Precarious Situation with the Help of ForceMetrics Velocity

Earlier this year, officers were called to the downtown area in response to a disorderly conduct complaint. When police arrived, they found the individual agitated, shouting profanities at both bystanders and the responding officers. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, the officers offered the assistance of the BEAR Team, a pilot program that provides specialized support for non-violent mental health incidents. The individual, however, refused their help.

To confirm the person’s identity, they used the ForceMetrics Velocity™ platform, which provided photos and background information that matched the subject. Despite the individual’s attempts to resist arrest, officers were able to take him into custody without further incident. The subject was then transported to the detention center, where he was booked and processed.

Resolution & Impact

The incident was resolved without injuries to the public, officers, or the suspect. While the BEAR Team’s assistance was declined, the situation highlighted the continued availability of alternative response options for future calls.
